Rain-date is August 22, 2044

Every once in a while, celestial bodies align to create an amazing spectacle known as a Total Solar Eclipse.  This is not one of those times.  At least not for those of us here in Western North Carolina.  So we have two choices: drive to St. Louis or settle for 84% of totality.  St. Louis is a great town but…

Meet at 11:45 am for a 12:00 pm departure from Fresh Market. We will arrive at Tuxedo Park about 1:00 pm. A rented the picnic shelter is reserved for our use. The eclipse begins at about 1:50 pm, will reach the maximum at about 3:00 pm and will end a little after 4:00 pm. You are welcome to stay for as much or as little as you like. Contact event host David Mathias with any questions that you might have.

The route will take us via Pinnacle Mountain Rd, one of the best driving roads in the area, in David’s own humble opinion. Then to Tuxedo Park to watch the not-quite total eclipse and enjoy a picnic lunch. (This is not a catered event – bring your own picnic).

To view the eclipse safely, please purchase eclipse viewing glasses.  They are available online and are very inexpensive (just a few dollars).

In the event of clouds or rain, we will proceed as follows:

Clouds: It’s a beautiful drive even without an eclipse so we’ll proceed as planned.

Rain: In the event of rain, we will cancel the drive.  The rain-date is August 22, 2044 – the next total solar eclipse visible in the US (but not Asheville).  At the discretion of the events chair, we may wait for the next total solar eclipse visible in Asheville – October 17, 2153.
