Based on past participation numbers we’ve now hit the limit for our reservation with the Iron Key Brewery. Member reservations are now closed. Many thanks for your interest – we’ll certainly do this again in the early fall! – Al and Laura. Vive la France! (ok, let’s not get too carried away!)

July 14 is Bastille Day (French national holiday) and we’ll celebrate by storming the Iron Key Brewing Co. in Columbus, housed in a former NC state prison. It’s a jail Break-IN; prison orange not required but…

The plan: the 55 minute drive departs Flat Rock Ingles (220 N Highland Lake Rd.) at 10:30 sharp (arrive 10:00-10:15). We’ll take 176 down through Saluda, into Tryon and through scenic hunting country roads into Columbus. The drive concludes after lunch (hopefully we’ll all be released on our own recognizance) and you’re free to choose your own route home. DRIVE ROUTE PDF

Iron Key did a great job hosting us in April and is happy to have us back. Please RSVP by Thurs., July 13 so we can let them know how many to expect. https://ironkeybrewing.com

And Sat., July 15 is St. Swithin’s Day* in the UK and hoping to encourage good weather, we’ll toast St. Swithin a day early at lunch.

* And if you’re not in the know about St. Swithin’s Day (July 15), according to folklore, if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day it will rain for 40 days, but if it is fair, 40 days of fair weather will follow.

And if you really want to be in the know…St. Swithin was Bishop of Winchester from 852 to 862. At his request he was buried in the churchyard, where rain and the steps of passersby might fall on his grave. The legend says that after his body was moved inside the cathedral on July 15, 971, a great storm ensued. The first textual evidence for the weather prophecy appears to have come from a 13th- or 14th-century entry in a manuscript at Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

Happy Motoring,
